Free Activities and Cheap Attractions

In addition to paid and guided activities and attractions, Lake Te Anau and Fiordland National Park offers a range of cheap and FREE activities and attractions which are suitable for your entire family.

Some of the activities listed below are adventurous and care should be taken to research your preferred activity, weather on the day may limit your ability to complete safely, licenses are required for some activities.

Local Day Walks

Walk part of the Kepler Track, the Lakefront near the Holiday Park or from the Holiday Park to the Upukeroa River Mouth, Also short day walks are available on the Hollyford and Routeburn Tracks.

Catch a Fish

Fish caught in Fiordland are Brown and Rainbow Trout, a fishing license, rod and lures are required for this activity. You can fish year round on Lake Te Anau and the lake directly across from our Holiday Park is as good a location as any. A rod, lures and a day or season license can be acquired in Te Anau.

Lake Henry in Ivon Wilson Park behind our Holiday Park is a Junior Fishery which is stocked with fish each year and a great location to learn to fish. A Junior Fishery means that only license holders aged 17 years and under may fish.

The Upukerora and Whitestone Rivers are popular fly fishing rivers with clear shallow pools where you can stalk your fish (seasonal opening).

The Waiau River (seasonal opening) and Lake Manapouri (year round) are also fantastic fishing locations

Remember to check, clean and dry your gear to prevent the spread of Didymo.

Mountain Bike Trails

Te Anau’s Mountain Bike trail is located in Ivon Wilson Park, directly behind our Holiday Park. You can also bike from our Holiday Park around the Lakefront to the Upukerora river mouth. Some up river trails are also possible (on the Upukerora), remember to check, clean and dry your gear.

Lakefront Walking and Jogging Tracks

Popular morning walk or jogging pathways are around Ivon Wilson Park (alongside the Holiday Park) and into the Wildlife Park or out of town further towards the Control Gates (45 minute walk from Holiday Park).

Another popular trail is from our Holiday Park, past the Glowworm Caves Wharf and right around the Lakefront to the Upukerora River Mouth.

Children’s Playgrounds

In addition to our Holiday Park, there is a popular play area at Lions Park in the Te Anau town centre and also at the Te Anau Boat Harbour there is a smaller play area.

Department of Conservation Museum

The Department of Conservation has informative displays and souvenirs at their office directly opposite our Holiday Park.

Te Anau Trout Observatory

Te Anau Trout Observatory is a $2 coin entry into their underground aquarium to view Rainbow and Brown Trout as well as Eels!

Te Anau Wildlife Centre

An open air park where you can walk around the wildlife enclosures and view Native New Zealand bird species.

Feed the Ducks

Has that Loaf of Bread in your Campervan or backpack gone moldy? Why not take some time to feed the ducks across the road from our Holiday Park?

Polar Plunge – Lake Te Anau

Any time of the year you can dip in Lake Te Anau, best location is directly over the road and along towards the left – you will see the Yacht Club Wharf at the left hand end of the beach. The Lake is very cold and so your swim will probably be quite short. Limit your time in the water to ensure you don’t catch a cold or worse!

Fiordland View Points

Ramparts Road Viewpoint.

From this elevated viewpoint you can see Lakes Te Anau and Manapouri, the Takitimu Mountains and Mount Titiroa on Lake Manapouri and the Kepler and Murchison Mountains and Fiordland Mountains towards Milford Sound.

Control Gates – Kepler Track Viewpoint

This is located on the first right turn after the Control Gates Car park – this is a lovely location to look out over Lake Te Anau and the Te Anau Township

Upukerora River Mouth Viewpoint

This is located on the first left hand turn after the 100 km sign on the road towards Milford Sound – this is down a gravel road which does get a bit bumpy towards the River Mouth.
