Skipper

Skipper – Doubtful Sound Kayak

Te Anau-based | Season: October – May | Part-Time & Full-Time Options

Are you a qualified skipper who thrives in a remote and spectacular environment? We’re on the lookout for an experienced and safety-conscious Skipper to join our friendly, professional team at Doubtful Sound Kayak for the 2025/2026 season.

About the Role

Based in Te Anau, this role involves skippering a small commercial vessel between Manapouri and in Doubtful Sound and driving on the Wilmot Pass. You’ll be responsible for transporting gear, supporting the kayaking team, and ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our vessel in a remote wilderness setting.

This is not your standard skippering job — it’s an opportunity to be part of an authentic Fiordland experience where you’ll work closely with a small, tight-knit team, surrounded by towering mountains, misty fiords, and curious wildlife.

Key Responsibilities

  • Skipper a small vessel (under 24m) in Doubtful Sound
  • Ensure safe and timely operations for kayak support logistics
  • Perform basic maintenance and safety checks
  • Assist with trip setup and pack down when required
  • Support kayak guides and operations team with gear, transport, and communication

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • SRL 24m (or equivalent) – Required
  • P Endorsement Licence – Required (or willingness to obtain)
  • First Aid Certificate (current or willingness to renew)
  • Strong situational awareness and excellent judgement in variable conditions
  • Confident operating in remote and changeable environments
  • Excellent communication skills and a calm, professional manner

Kayak Guide

Kayak Guides – Doubtful Sound Kayak

Te Anau-based | Season: October – May | Full-Time Seasonal Positions

Do you love the outdoors, connecting with people, and exploring wild, remote places? We’re looking for enthusiastic Kayak Guides to join our tight-knit team at Doubtful Sound Kayak for the upcoming summer season.

This is an incredible opportunity to live and work in one of New Zealand’s most awe-inspiring environments — guiding small-group kayak tours through the dramatic fiords of Doubtful Sound, deep in the heart of Fiordland National Park.

About the Role

Our kayak guides deliver exceptional full-day experiences for our guests — combining paddling, interpretation, safety, and environmental care. You’ll be leading and supporting up to 10 guests per day on guided sea kayak tours, providing insight into the landscape, local wildlife, and Māori and conservation stories of the area.

Each day starts in Te Anau, with an early morning coach journey followed by boat and road transfers into Doubtful Sound. The remoteness of this job is part of what makes it so special.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead or assist with guided kayak tours in Doubtful Sound
  • Deliver engaging commentary and interpretation of the environment
  • Maintain guest safety and wellbeing on and off the water
  • Prepare equipment daily (kayaks, gear, lifejackets, clothing)
  • Monitor weather and conditions to assess risks and plan trips accordingly
  • Work closely with the skipper and guiding team in a remote setting

Requirements

  • Outdoor guiding qualifications preferred (but not essential — full training provided for the right person)
  • Previous customer service or outdoor leadership experience
  • Current First Aid Certificate (or willingness to obtain)
  • Physically fit and confident on the water
  • Comfortable working long days in a remote and changeable environment
  • Positive attitude, strong communicator, team player

OFFICE SUPERVISOR – TRACKNET TRANSPORT

Te Anau | Full-Time | Year-Round Position

Are you a confident leader with strong computer skills and a passion for providing top-notch customer service? We’re seeking a proactive and organised Office Supervisor to help run daily operations at Tracknet, Fiordland’s trusted transport provider for Great Walks and beyond.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a family-owned tourism business in a key frontline role, working with a supportive team in a dynamic, customer-facing environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and support front desk operations
  • Manage bookings, cancellations, and customer queries (email, phone & in-person)
  • Coordinate staff rosters and seasonal training
  • Ensure smooth daily operations and clear communication with drivers and logistics teams
  • Troubleshoot issues and ensure a high standard of customer experience
  • Monitor booking systems, passenger manifests, and reporting

What We’re Looking For

  • Excellent computer literacy — confident with online booking systems, Gmail/Outlook, spreadsheets, and multitasking tools
  • Experience in a supervisory or team leader role
  • Strong organisational and communication skills
  • Calm under pressure, solution-focused, and detail-oriented
  • Friendly, approachable, and guest-focused mindset

FRONT OFFICE ASSISTANT – TRACKNET TRANSPORT

Te Anau | Seasonal (September – May)

Looking for a role where your friendly personality and computer skills can shine? Join Tracknet for the Great Walks season and help visitors get to and from Fiordland’s most iconic trails!

We’re seeking a Front Office Assistant for our Te Anau office. You’ll be the first point of contact for many of our guests — answering questions, confirming bookings, and providing reassurance as they prepare for their walk of a lifetime.

Key Responsibilities

  • Process customer bookings and enquiries via phone, email, and in person
  • Operate our booking and ticketing system (training provided)
  • Assist with manifesting, printing, and dispatching daily transport runs
  • Provide accurate, helpful information on Tracknet services and Great Walk logistics
  • Keep the office tidy, organised, and professional

What We’re Looking For

  • Strong computer confidence — this is a fully digital, customer-facing role
  • Great interpersonal skills and a genuine, calm manner
  • Clear communicator with strong attention to detail
  • Able to work in a small, fast-paced team environment
  • Previous customer service experience preferred but not essential
