The Great Walks
Of Fiordland

Fiordland National Park is home to some of New Zealand’s most iconic and breathtaking walking tracks. Whether you are seeking an epic multi-day hike or a short scenic stroll, Fiordland offers a diverse range of trails through pristine rainforests, towering mountains, and spectacular fiords. From the world-renowned Great Walks to lesser-known gems, there is a walk for every adventurer.

The Great Walks of Fiordland

Fiordland is home to three of New Zealand’s ten Great Walks. These premier tracks offer well-maintained paths, breathtaking scenery, and an unforgettable wilderness experience.

1. Milford Track

Length: 53.5 km | Duration: 4 days | Difficulty: Moderate to Hard
Often described as the “finest walk in the world,” the Milford Track takes you through ancient beech forests, alongside crystal-clear rivers, and over the stunning Mackinnon Pass. Hikers are rewarded with incredible views of cascading waterfalls, including the spectacular Sutherland Falls, and a grand finale at Milford Sound. This walk requires booking in advance, as spaces are limited.

2. Routeburn Track

Length: 32 km | Duration: 2–3 days | Difficulty: Moderate
A stunning alpine walk, the Routeburn Track connects Fiordland and Mount Aspiring National Park. The track takes hikers past glacial rivers, through mountain valleys, and offers panoramic views from Harris Saddle. This track is shorter than the Milford Track but equally rewarding, making it a favorite for those seeking high-altitude landscapes.

3. Kepler Track

Length: 60 km | Duration: 3–4 days | Difficulty: Moderate to Hard
The Kepler Track is a circular route that begins and ends near Te Anau, offering a mix of beech forests, limestone bluffs, and breathtaking ridgeline views. One of the highlights is Luxmore Hut, where hikers can experience stunning sunsets and visit nearby caves. This well-formed track is ideal for those who want a diverse landscape in one multi-day hike.

Other Walks in Fiordland

For those looking for shorter hikes or alternative routes to the Great Walks, Fiordland offers an array of incredible day walks and shorter tracks.

1. Lake Marian Track

Length: 3 hours return | Difficulty: Moderate
This track leads to the stunning Lake Marian, a high-altitude alpine lake surrounded by towering peaks. The trail begins with a short walk to waterfalls before ascending through native bush to the lake. The reflections of the mountains in the still water make for an unforgettable experience.

2. Key Summit Track (Part of the Routeburn Track)

Length: 3 hours return | Difficulty: Moderate
This walk begins at The Divide and follows the first section of the Routeburn Track. It offers incredible views over Fiordland’s valleys and mountains. The well-maintained trail leads to an alpine summit with spectacular panoramic vistas, making it one of the best short hikes in the region.

3. Gertrude Saddle Route

Length: 4–6 hours return | Difficulty: Hard (experienced trampers only)
This track is not for the faint-hearted but offers some of the best views in Fiordland. The route takes you through an alpine valley, past waterfalls, and up steep rock faces with chain-assisted sections. The reward is a breathtaking view over Milford Sound from the saddle.

4. Hollyford Track

Length: 56 km | Duration: 4–5 days | Difficulty: Moderate
For those seeking an off-the-beaten-path multi-day hike, the Hollyford Track offers a lower-altitude adventure through lush rainforests and past remote lakes. Unlike the Great Walks, this track does not require hut bookings, making it an excellent option for independent hikers.

5. Luxmore Hut via Kepler Track

Length: 6–8 hours return | Difficulty: Moderate to Hard
A great option for a challenging day hike, this track follows the Kepler Track up to Luxmore Hut. It offers incredible views over Lake Te Anau and the surrounding mountains. The nearby Luxmore Caves provide an exciting bonus for those who reach the hut.

6. The Chasm Walk

Length: 20 minutes return | Difficulty: Easy
Perfect for a quick stop along the Milford Road, this short walk leads to dramatic waterfalls and sculpted rock formations created by the powerful Cleddau River. It’s an easy but fascinating way to experience Fiordland’s geological wonders.
